Talbina Recipe (Prophetic Talbina)

Share it

Talbina is a barley porridge- recommended to us by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him ﷺ. It’s a simple healthy breakfast porridge consisting of barley flour and milk. Barley has plenty of nutrients, and this healthy breakfast is nourishing and quick to make. This talbina takes less than 5 minutes to prep and it’s healthy!

Narrated `Aisha radiyaAllahu anha (may God be pleased with her) (the wife of the Prophet ﷺ ) that whenever one of her relatives died, the women assembled and then dispersed (returned to their houses) except her relatives and close friends. She would order that a pot of Talbina be cooked. Then Tharid (a dish prepared from meat and bread) would be prepared and the Talbina would be poured on it. `Aisha would say (to the women),”Eat of it, for I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘The Talbina soothes the heart of the patient and relieves him from some of his sadness.’ ” Sahih Bukhari, 5423.

How To Make Talbina:

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, previously recommended the sick and those grieving over a dead person to use Talbina. She used to say, “I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘at-Talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient and makes it active and relieves some of his sorrow and grief.'” Sahih Bukhari, 5689.

Making the barley porridge is super simple.

To start, I like to begin by toasting the barley flour just to give it a little bit of color and better flavor. We use ground barley flour so it does not have any whole pieces.

Then, add the milk (or water) is on top. Whisk the milk and barley flour together for a few minutes on medium heat, until thickened.

Pour the talbina into bowls, and top with more Prophetic foods such as dates, honey, figs.

Traditionally, the porridge does not contain any flavorings, but you can mix in some ground cinnamon, or cardamom. Alternatively, you could sprinkle them on top too.

how to make talbina

With all that’s going on in the world- especially in Gaza and Sudan, it’s only normal for the believer to be saddened by what’s happening. Follow some Prophetic advice, and make some talbina along with lots of dua. May Allah سبحانه وتعالى relieve them of their pain and grant them victory, and may He use us in ways to help them gain victory for His cause. Ameen.
