Variations and Substitutes

Swap the spread: if you don’t have labneh, use Greek yogurt, cream cheese, or sour cream for a creamy base.

Different herbs: substitute parsley and dill with cilantro, basil, or chives for a new flavor twist.

Bagel options: use whole wheat, everything bagels, or even sourdough toast or pita bread.

Make it spicy: add a dash of harissa, sriracha, or extra chili flakes for a kick of heat.

Extra protein: mix in canned tuna or smoked salmon for a heartier sandwich.

Citrus boost: add a squeeze of lemon juice or a sprinkle of lemon zest to brighten up the flavors.

Recipe Tips

Perfectly boiled eggs: for easy-to-peel eggs, place them in boiling water for 10–12 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath immediately.

Toast for texture: For a toasty, crisp contrast to the creamy egg salad, always toast your bagels.

Mix gently: to avoid a mushy texture, carefully fold the eggs into the labneh mixture, to keep nice, chunky chunks.

Adjust consistency: if the mixture seems too thick, add a little water or extra olive oil.

Taste as you go: za’atar blends can vary in saltiness, so taste before adding extra salt.

Storage Tips

Avoid soggy bagels: don’t assemble the sandwiches until right before eating to maintain freshness and crunch.

Store separately: keep the za’atar egg salad leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Toast the bagels just before serving.

Meal prep friendly: prep the egg salad ahead of time and portion it out for quick breakfasts or lunches.

Refreshing leftovers: before serving, stir in a little extra olive oil or labneh to revive the creaminess if the salad thickens in the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of bagels work best?

Plain, sesame, or everything bagels are perfect. You can also try whole wheat or gluten-free bagels, depending on your preference.

Can I add extra vegetables to the za’atar egg salad?

Yes! Finely chopped celery, cucumbers, or bell peppers add crunch and freshness without overpowering the flavors.

How can I prevent my egg salad from becoming watery?

Make sure the eggs are completely dry before mixing. Don’t add too much water to the labneh mixture. Start with 1 tablespoon of water and add more only if needed.
